The First Step To Getting Pregnant
Fertility Tests can be an important step in the process of getting pregnant when it does not happen naturally or easily. There are many factors that can be involved in infertility problems. I speak here from personal experience as my husband and I seek to get pregnant and have our precious baby.
Often infertility can be associated with women and their reproductive system, but it is also important to keep in mind that about one third of cases of infertility can be caused by problems with the male partner’s reproductive system. Hence when looking into Fertility Tests it is important to investigate tests for both the male and female partner.
There are many different tests that can be carried out for both male and female infertility and it is important to cover all aspects to ensure that nothing is missed. Having said that there are some initial tests that can be carried out to rule out potential problems or to give an indication of what further investigations are required.
When looking at male fertility the first test that is often carried out is a semen analysis. This fertility test is relatively easy, as it just requires the collection of a sample of semen from the male partner. It is important that the sample is fresh, kept at body temperature and then taken to the laboratory as quickly as possible for analysis.
This sample of semen is then examined under a microscope to analyze certain important characteristics of the sperm that are present in the sample. In such Fertility Tests there are many factors that are looked at to determine if there may be a fertility problem.
On the female side of the equation there are many more tests that can be carried out. A step that can be carried out at home is to use an Ovulation Predictor Test. This may be useful to show when ovulation is occurring and hence an optimum time for getting pregnant.
Often, your doctor may request blood tests as the first step, where certain factors are examined to see if any clear directions are given for further tests that can be carried out. Initial factors that are examined in fertility testing blood tests may include full blood count, iron levels, zinc levels and fertility hormone levels. These tests listed here are certainly not exhaustive, but are some of the initial Fertility Tests that the doctor may carry out as a starting point for further investigations.
